Kinh doanh ứng dụng di động đang “bùng nổ” trên khắp thế giới. Ngày nay cả Apple và Google đều là những người lãnh đạo nhưng Microsoft và Research in Motion (Blackberries) không ở xa đằng sau. Khi những công ti khổng lồ này cạnh tranh, hàng triệu người phát triển ứng dụng apps cũng cạnh tranh về vị trí của họ trong thị trường mới và sinh lời về điện thoại di động và máy tính bảng.

Ngày nay có nhiều ứng dụng cho điện thoại di động tới mức khó mà quyết định được ứng dụng nào để dùng. Một số apps là tự do nhưng nhiều apps được bán với giá $1 tới $3 từng lần tải xuống. Một người phát triển nói với báo chí: “Nó dường như chẳng là gì nhưng nếu bạn có một triệu tải xuống thì bạn có thể làm được một triệu đô la. Trong thị trường này, số lượng là chìa khoá. Bạn càng bán nhiều, bạn càng làm ra nhiều tiền.” Mặc dầu phần lớn ứng dụng di động là phổ quát điều có nghĩa là bất kì ai ở bất kì nước nào cũng có thể dùng nhưng có thị trường mới cho việc bản địa hoá theo ngôn ngữ địa phương như hướng dẫn về tiệm ăn nhà hàng, chỉ hướng đường phố, hay trò chơi được thiết kế đặc biệt cho văn hoá đặc thù. Thị trường cho trò chơi di động cũng rất nóng với vài triệu tải xuống mỗi ngày. Trò chơi hàng đầu như “Call of Duty”, “Black Ops”, “Pac Man”, “Blackjack” và “Uno” đã đạt tới vài triệu tải xuống nhưng đây là những trò chơi video đã nổi tiếng, nhưng còn có một số điều ngạc nhiên như “Angry Bird” có 12 triệu tải xuống một tháng và trở hành một trong những trò chơi điện thoại di động phổ biến nhất. Có các apps được thiết kế cho người của đủ mọi nhóm tuổi, từ trẻ em tới người già. Thành phố có nhiều người phát triển apps di động nhất là New York. Vì phần lớn các apps đều phức tạp và tinh vi, người ta tin rằng chúng được phát triển bởi các nhà chuyên nghiệp hay các công ti phần mềm chuyên về nền di động. Los Angeles có số người phát triển ứng dụng lớn thứ hai. Dù những người này sống gần hay làm việc trong Hollywood hay không nhưng nhiều trong các apps này có chứa các đoạn video clips. Thứ ba là khu vực San Francisco và San Jose, nó được mong đợi vì các khu vực này đã có số lớn những người phát triển phần mềm (thung lũng Silicon).

Một trong các thành phố có số lượng người phát triển apps cao nhất là thành phố Kansas. Điều này là sự ngạc nhiên vì Kansas không được biết tới là khu vực công nghệ. Bắc Kinh và Thượng Hải là những chỗ khác nơi có nhiều người phát triển apps nữa nhưng apps của họ không rất nổi tiếng bên ngoài Trung Quốc. Riyadh ở A rập Saudi là số năm trong danh sách các thành phố phát triển apps.

Mobile application business

The mobile application business is “exploding” all over the world. Today both Apple and Google are leaders but Microsoft and Research in Motion (Blackberries) are not far behind. As these giant companies compete, so do millions of apps developers compete for their positions in the new and lucrative mobile phones and tablets markets.

Today there are so many applications for mobile phones that it is difficult to decide which ones to use. Some apps are free but many are sold for $1 to $3 each download. One developer told the newspapers: “It seems like nothing but if you have a million downloads then you can make a million dollars. In this market, it is the quantitive that is the key. The more you sell, the more money you make.” Although most mobile apps are universal that means anybody in any country can use but there is new market for localization in local languages such as guide to restaurants, road directions, or games designed specifically for a particular culture. The market for mobile games is also very hot with several million download each day. Top games like “Call of Duty”, “Black Ops”, “Pac Man”, “Blackjack” and “Uno” have reached several million download but these are already well known videogames but there are some surprise such as “Angry Bird” which has 12 million downloads a month and become one of the best popular mobile phone game. There are apps designed for people of all age groups, from young children to the elderly. The estimated mobile app market is valued at $5 billion dollars but it could go as high as $12 billion or more as more people are using mobile phones and tablets instead of laptops.

It is estimated that there are fifty to hundred thousand developers currently writing mobile applications, some already had their sales in several million dollars. The interesting fact is many of them are not software professionals but people from various age groups and occupations. The youngest is only 14 years old and the oldest is 76 years old. Some are self-taught from books and internet tutorials when other take few weeks training courses in colleges or vocational schools. The youngest millionaire is a 16 years old high school student who created ten mobile phone games, sold for one dollars each.

In the past, most software applications were developed by large companies in the U.S such as Google, Microsoft etc. With mobile phones and tablets, applications were developed from all over the world by people who only equipped with a laptop and internet connection. One developer said: “It is so easy to enter this market as there is no barrier. Anyone with a good idea and a laptop can do it. The issue is competition with others since there are so many apps already.”

The city that has the most mobile apps developers is New York. Since most apps were complex and sophisticated, it is believed that they are developed by software professionals or software companies specialized in mobile platform. Los Angeles has the second largest number of application developers. Whether these people live near or work in Hollywood or not but many of these apps contain video clips. The third is San Francisco and San Jose area, it was expected because these areas already have a large number of software developers (Silicon valley).

One of the cities that has highest number of apps developers is Kansas City. This is a surprise because Kansas is not known as a technology area. However, there was a lot of efforts and investments made by local government in past several years to encourage more people to study computing, especially in public high schools.

Outside the U.S, the city of London has the highest number of apps developers and ranked as number one. It is estimated that there are over three thousand developers working on mobile apps here. Amsterdam is another city that has many app creators per square mile. This is in part because the mobile market is very well developed in the Netherlands.

The second largest source for app development is in Bangalore, India. This city is well established as the Indian IT capital with thousand of outsourcing companies. This city is filled with highly skilled technology workers who know how to create apps. Beijing and Shanghai are another places where there are many app developers too but their apps are not very well known outside of China. Riyadh in Saudi Arabia comes in at number five on the list of app development cities.

On the list of mobile apps development cities, you can find almost every cities in every country on earth. It seems that mobile apps have become a new market, new way of making money for many people who realize that with few weeks training, they could develop products and compete in the globalized market.
