Năm nay, Trường về Khoa học máy tính (SCS) của Carnegie Mellon được xếp hạng thứ nhất trong cả nước giữa tất cả các chương trình khoa học máy tính trong ấn bản 2011 của tạp chí News & World Report về “Trường tốt nhất nước Mĩ.” Năm ngoái, 2009, Trường về Khoa học máy tính của Carnegie Mellon được xếp hạng thứ tư trong cả nước. Trong các phân loại chuyên môn hơn, SCS xếp hạng thứ nhất về ngôn ngữ lập trình, xếp hạng hai về trí tuệ nhân tạo, xếp hạng ba về hệ thông tin và hạng năm về lí thuyết tính toán.

“Carnegie Mellon nỗ lực thúc đẩy biên giới của nghiên cứu và giáo dục trong khoa học máy tính,” Dean Randal E. Bryant của SCS nói. “Chúng tôi theo đuổi một chương trình nghị sự rất rộng, trải theo cả lí thuyết và thiết kế máy tính, cũng như cách công nghệ thông tin có thể biến đổi xã hội và cuộc sống của các cá nhân. Trong khu vực chuyên môn, CIT xếp thứ 7 về công nghệ điện, xếp thứ 7 về kĩ nghệ môi trường, xếp thứ 10 về kĩ nghệ dân sự, xếp thứ 11 về kĩ nghệ cơ kí, xếp thứ 13 về khoa học và kĩ nghệ vật liệu, xếp thứ 16 về kĩ nghệ hoá học và xếp thứ 29 về kĩ nghệ sinh y. Trong chuyên môn toán học, Khoa toán của đại học Carnegie Mellon được xếp hạng ba về logic, hạng 10 về toán rời rạc và tổ hợp, xếp thứ 11 về toán học ứng dụng.

CMU ở Trung Đông

4/2010 – Bộ trưởng ngoại giao Mĩ Hillary Rodham Clinton gần đây đã tới thăm đại Carnegie Mellon University ở Qatar để tham dự phiên hỏi đáp công cộng với khán giả là sinh viên và giảng viên khoa.  Sự kiện này được tổ chức và dẫn bởi Al Jazeera TV trong cộng tác với Qatar Foundation và CarnegieMellonUniversity.

“Tôi đã theo dõi tiến bộ của Carnegie Mellon ở Qatar khá thường xuyên, và tôi vui mừng được chứng kiến bằng chính mắt mình cam kết phi thường của Qatar Foundation, Hoàng thân tiểu vương quốc và của nhân dân Qatar đối với tầm quan trọng của giáo dục và sự cộng tác của chúng ta giữa hai nước ” Bộ trưởng Clinton nói.

Bà ấy lưu ý rằng với đa số dân chúng ở Trung Đông đang dưới độ tuổi 25, các quyết định của Carnegie Mellon University mở ra khuôn viên chi nhánh ở Qatar là điều đúng cần làm. Đại học tốt nhất ở Mĩ có thể giúp cải tiến giáo dục ở Trung Đông và đặt tương lai sáng lạn cho sinh viên trong việc theo đuổi các cơ hội về hoà bình, thịnh vượng và cơ hội.

Bộ trưởng Clinton nhận câu hỏi từ sinh viên và trả lời về đa dạng chủ đề, kể cả vũ khí hạt nhân ở Iran; tình hình Israel-Palestin; và vai trò của bà ấy trong việc thực hiện chương trình nghị sự của tổng thống Barack Obama. Bà ấy cũng nói về tầm quan trọng của giáo dục và vai trò nó giữ trong việc cung cấp cơ hội cho thanh niên, đặc biệt phụ nữ, trong vùng.

“Bộ trưởng Clinton hiểu nhu cầu và đánh giá cao sứ mệnh của hệ thống giáo dục của chúng ta. Điều rõ ràng chuyến thăm của bà ấy tới Carnegie Mellon Qatar chỉ mới là bắt đầu,” Charles E. Chuyến thăm của Bộ trưởng Clinton tới Qatar là một phần của nỗ lực của Mĩ để tăng cường đối thoại với Hồi giáo trên khắp thế giới. Thông điệp cốt lõi của bà ấy về cộng tác quốc tế và giải quyết vấn đề đã động chạm tới các giá trị nền tảng của CarnegieMellonUniversity.

Carnegie Mellon ranked # 1 in the U.S

This year, Carnegie Mellon‘s School of Computer Science (SCS) is ranked first in the nation among all computer science programs in the 2011 edition of U.S. News & World Report magazine’s “America’s Best Schools.” Last year, 2009, Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science ranked 4th in the nation. In specialty categories, SCS ranks first in programming language, 2nd in artificial intelligence, 3rd in Information systems and 5th in computing theory.

“Carnegie Mellon strives to push the frontiers of research and education in computer science,” said SCS Dean Randal E. Bryant. “We pursue a very broad agenda, spanning both the theory and design of computers, as well as how information technology can transform society and the lives of individuals. We are pleased to be counted as the top computer science programs in the United States.”

In other rankings, the College of Engineering (CIT) is ranked 6th in the U.S. In specialty areas, CIT is 7th in electrical engineering, 7th in environmental engineering, 10th in civil engineering, 11th in mechanical engineering, 13th in materials science and engineering, 16th in chemical engineering and 29th in biomedical engineering. In mathematical specialties, the Carnegie Mellon College of Science’s Mathematical Department is ranked 3rd in logic, 10th in discrete mathematics and combinations, 11th in applied mathematics.

CMU in Middle East

April 2010 – U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton recently visited CarnegieMellonUniversity in Qatar to hold a public question-and-answer session with an audience of students and faculty.  The event was organized and moderated by Al Jazeera TV in collaboration with Qatar Foundation and CarnegieMellonUniversity.

“I have been following the progress of Carnegie Mellon in Qatar for quite sometime, and I am delighted to be able to see with my own eyes the extraordinary commitment of the Qatar Foundation, His Highness the Emir and of the people of Qatar to the importance of education and our collaboration between the two countries” said Secretary Clinton.

She noted that with the majority of the population in the Middle East being under the age of 25, the decisions of CarnegieMellonUniversity to open a branch campus in Qatar is the right thing to do. The best university in the U.S can helps improve the education in the Middle East and sets a bright future for students in their pursuit of opportunities for peace, prosperity and opportunity.

Secretary Clinton took questions from students and guests on a variety of topics, including nuclear weapons in Iran; the Israeli-Palestinian situation; and her role in the implementation of President Barack Obama’s agenda. She talked on the importance of education and the role it plays in providing opportunities for the youth, especially women, in the region.

“Secretary Clinton understands the needs and appreciates the mission of our Education system. It’s clear her visit to Carnegie Mellon Qatar is just the beginning,” said Charles E. Thorpe, dean of Carnegie Mellon Qatar. “President Obama has an initiative on entrepreneurship in the Arab world and Carnegie Mellon is suited to be one of those centers. He also has extensive plans for more science and technology development in the Arab world; CMU Qatar is the ideal place for that.”

Thorpe added, “The Secretary talked of her initiative on women in parliament. Under the guidance of Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, there is no place better than CMU Qatar to talk about empowering Arab and Muslim women. Carnegie Mellon and Qatar both embody many of the ideals the Secretary talked about.”

Secretary Clinton’s visit to Qatar is part of U.S. efforts to boost dialogue with Muslims around the world. Her core message of international collaboration and problem solving touched upon the fundamental values of CarnegieMellonUniversity.
